A Recreational Water Trail
Fueled by environmental advocacy and enjoyment for the outdoors, this grassroots and volunteer-led organization has steward public and private islands and coastal inlets for over thirty years. What started as a group of passionate water-lovers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore the Maine coast, turned into the development of a unique ‘water trail’ network that allows public access to over 375 miles of coastal waters and islands.
Over the years, the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) adopted the admirable ‘handshake agreement' with public and private landowners, and has since established partnerships with nonprofits and organizations to care for and protect these island and waterways.
The organization's guiding principle is ‘LEAVE NO TRACE’, which is something we at GoGo strongly support and practice.
The MITA programs include membership opportunities, established ‘trail’ rules and guidebook, island clean-ups and trash removal, and the monitoring of these natural spaces.
MITA's hard work and dedication allows both locals and visitors to enjoy Maine’s incredible coastline and unique islands, and instills environmental stewardship among visitors to protect our coastal land - and we love them for that!
